Monemvasia

ABOUT

knot

One of the best-preserved castle towns in Greece, Monemvasia has a unique landscape and a wonderful view of the Aegean sea.

The clear view of the sea and the protection the single passage provided proved to be very useful for the settlement since the years of the Byzantine empire, making it well protected from attacks, powerful and important for the local economy. Monemvasia is also known as the birthplace of the Greek poet Yannis Ritsos.

Its name means “single passage” in Greek, reflecting the fact that it’s accessible from land through only a small bridge. Walking is the only way to wander through the streets of Monemvasia since its streets are too narrow for any vehicle. The settlement is also known for its 24 Greek Orthodox churches, all build within its boundaries.
