Spetses
ABOUT
Spetses is a beautiful island just one and a half nautical mile from Portoheli.
Its ancient name was “Πιτυούσα”, a word that means “The one that’s full of pine trees”, reflecting the presence of many pine trees on its land.
Today Spetses is a major destination. You can enjoy its beautiful scenery and have a walk to the old port or you can go for a romantic horse and cart ride.
The island played a najor role in the Greek War of Independence. Wealthy families from Spetses (along with Hydra and Psara) played a crucial role in the naval battles during its years.
One of the most important battles was the naval battle of Spetses in September 8, 1822. To commemorate the victorious end of the battle the locals built the Orthodox church of “Panagia Armata”. Today the festival of Armata, an annual festival lasting a whole week in memory of the event, attracts a large amount of spectators every year. The festval’s events include musical, traditional dance and theatrical performances as well as art exhibitions. The peak event is a spectacular naval battle reenactment with a spectacular fireworks show.
